A Greenhouse on the Cheap

Saturday was the day that my friend and I set out to build our greenhouse, modeled after the one Karl O'melay built at his ranch somewhere in the Ozarks. Here is a list of the materials. We made a few modifications but not much. One of them was that we used three panel fences and spaced them a bit wider so we could get several racks inside. This caused us to have to cut the storm door down about 6 inches. The amazing thing though is that we had almost all of the materials and what we didn't have was donated from friends. The only think we had to buy was the cattle panel fencing which costs $29.95 each (15'x52") at the Tops True Value in Elwood. My next post will detail step-by-step how we put it together. You can see some of the photos of the finished product below.

Materials List
  • 23 Cinder Blocks
  • Steele fence posts or re-bar
  • 3 x Cattle Stock Panel Fence 16’x52”
  • 2 sheets of plywood
  • 4 boards 2x4 or 2x6 or 2x8 (we used 2x8x20 and cut them)
  • One aluminum storm door
  • Lots of zip ties
  • Large office binder clamps
  • 6 millimeter, clear plastic 10’ wide or wider
  • Door latch
    Thermometer
