Week 13 Box & Farm Report

The season is starting to wind down. It has been a hot, wet summer, which is probably much better than a drought, but the weeds tend to thrive faster than the veggies. Many other organic farms have also experienced this weed infestation this year. Throughout the season we have really worked to stuff the boxes full. I would rather all of you have too much than not enough. But, for the last three to four weeks of this year the boxes might not have the heft or variety that we had just a few weeks ago.

We have had several things do well this year and several things that didn't. I guess that's farming though. It's what makes it interesting and challenging, and rewarding when things really do well.

Here are some things that did well this year:
Potatoes
Giant Fordhook Chard
Kale
Garlic
Sweet Corn
Tomatoes
Basil
Snow Peas
Sugar Snap Peas
Broccoli
Onions
Peaches
Apples
Fennel
Radishes
Prize Choy
Lettuces (most of them. I had a couple of varieties that didn't do well. Note to self).

Some things that did or are doing ok:
Egg plant
Green Beans
Yellow squash
Cucumbers
Beets
Popcorn is doing so/so. It is slow in filling out on the ears.
Arugula
Cabbage
Tomatillos

Some stuff that failed:
Zucchini (And I thought any idiot with dirt, sun, water and seeds could grow them). The weeds liked them better.)
Bright Lights Chard
Kohlrabi
Second garden of sweet corn (got flooded)

I also think my two older kids learned more this year about what it takes. I think we learned a lot as a family as to how to teach and make it less demanding for next year and still meet the needs of our CSA friends.

Here's what we expect to have for this week (week 13):
Apples
Potatoes
Tomatoes
Basil
Kale
Onions

Week 14
Onions
Cherry Tomatoes
Basil
Chives
Potatoes

Week 15
Potatoes
Garlic
Tomatoes (where available)

Week 16
Butternut squash (if available)
Onions
Potatoes
Tomatoes (if available)
Kale
Arugula
